What is it?

Define Hierarchy can automatically create an indented hierarchy list in Excel based on predefined hierarchy ordered parent / child relationships.

Please Note: The data must be arranged in its parent / child sort order, in order for the Define Hierarchy tool to accurately define an indented hierarchy column. If the dataset is not already arranged in order you will need to run the Hierarchy Based Sort tool first.

Utility Definitions:
General
Column Row:
The row that contains the column header names

Data Start Row:
The first row of the list

Data End Row:
The last row of the list

Indent Value:
The character(s) to use as the indent


References
Item Column:
The column that contains the parent and child item names

Parent Reference Column:
The column that contains the parent names for the value in the Item Column


Results
Hierarchy Column:
The column that the indented list will be created in

Top Levels Only:
When Top Levels Only is checked, the indented list will be created until an Item is reached that does not have a top level association. A Top Level is defined by an Item that does not have a value within its Parent Reference column.

Hierarchy Value From Column:
The column that contains the names that will be used when defining the indented list

No Parent:
When checked, highlights an Item within the created indented list if no parent is found


Apply
Select the Apply button to create the indented list while maintaining the Define Hierarchy dialog

OK
Select the OK button to create the indented list but also exiting from the Define Hierarchy dialog
